Action at the National Zoo
For days after Mei Xiang was AI'd she mostly stayed inside. I heard rumors that she was out in a yard early in the morning. They separated her and Tian as much as they could because their raging hormones were driving the poor pandas nuts.
Yesterday they let Mei out in Yard 2 - while Tian was in Yard 1. She was a total nutball. With the whole yard to herself on a wonderful cool day she climbed trees, rolled down hills and even wacked the weeble.
TODAY we saw them in the chutes on the panda cam - HEY - Tian and Mei are TOGETHER! Well, as soon as they let the two out, Tian made his move. Mei didn't seem too receptive at first, but eventually got into the mood and even started asking for it! They mated off and on for the next hour! It was an amazing thing to watch. And he would just walk all over her before and after! Full weight - all 4 paws. The keepers eventually separated them and they both konked out with smiles on their cute panda faces.
Later they were sitting calmly side by side eatting boo.
Did they expect Mei to be receptive a week after ovulation?

2007 Pregnancy Watch
Because we were confident that Mei had ovulated, Zoo scientists and veterinarians have performed two artificial inseminations on Mei Xiang. The first procedure took place yesterday early evening, and the second this morning. We will continue to monitor her hormones over the next severalMORE HERE

Poor Tian Tian
I haven't been watching the web cams as much lately 'cause they were sucking too much time, but there's snow on the ground and I'm feeling a little wheezy so I can't go down to the zoo. Anyway, Tai was being cute, but boring so I went to look at PC 1 to see if they were showing Tian Tian and there was the wild man up in a tree having a blast.
BUT on his way down he did this crazy flip and dropped the last couple feet. This wouldn't have been so bad except the flip ended with his head between the two parts of the split tree and he was quite stuck! It too a lot of effort for him to get out and he's been very subdued since. They called him over and checked him out a bit and it looked like he has a mark on his head. He got some treats and is finally wandering around again, but he has not resumed playing yet.
I bet he has a headache.

c'mon, mom, let's play!
Tai really wants Mei to play right now... but she won't hold still long enough! =) It's funny to watch him chasing after, try to wedge himself underneath her and be cute, and then she just walks off and leaves him upside down.

Okay, I'm going to contribute to the top 10 listing of this video -- a video that others have made videos complaining about those who think watching a panda video is funny -- because I think it's hilarious.100 Bucks if you don't Smile Current Mood: amused

Pandas' New Digs
The Asia Trail opens today at the National ZooTake a tour
There's also a photo gallery that's currently on the Washington Post's page
. Not sure how to directly link to it.
According to the zoo, Tai has already staked out a willow tree as his new digs.
OH WOW. (I'm going through the pics that the post has online) All three are in the same large yard!! (the caption on the last one is wrong - or, rather old. 8-10 is great panda viewing time. FONZ members only for the rest of the week.
EDIT: The zoo says "Mei and Tai will continue to be kept separate from Tian. "
PS: (sorry I keep changing this entry, but I just remembered some really hopeful news. I went to the FONZ annual board meeting last Friday and the president said that the wording of the agreement with China says that we get to keep any baby pandas two years - that's at least two years. There is some serious hope that Tai Shan will stay! (and I've heard some other panda fans are already setting him up with the female panda that was born in Atlanta not that long ago.)

Mr. Fuzzy Butt strikes again
I'm reminded of my cat Jezery who will not take no for an answer when she really wants attention. Mei is sprawled forward hugging a log. Tai is pester-pester poke-poke and when she totally ignores him, decides he will shove his way -- fuzzy butt out and wiggling like crazy -- under her stomach and then push her up and away from her log. That lasted longer than I thought Mei would stand for, honestly, before she shoved him out and went back to log-hugging. When he swiped her on top of the head is when she gave up, got up, and left... and who can blame her? :P
I read that Tai stayed up in a tree until 1:00am the other night... his latest ever.
He's disappeared off-camera now... find the panda! Oh, there he is, butt against the wall... nope, now he's standing on his head... and here comes Mei... get revenge, Mei!

The web cam is very interesting right now. They're in the new tunnel system and I think they are training them to travel in it. It's a rather neat system. Tai is a bit less interested in going where he's supposed to be going then Mei Xiang is. (less treat motivated, I'd guess)

In case you haven't been paying attention, they've been moving the pandas around and today Tai is exploring some new trees in one of the new yards. (not yet open to the public, but is on the web cam) Very cute.
Anyway, last night I was looking for a clip of a camera man surrounded by baby pandas (caught the end of a story), and while I could't find that clip yet (the one dated 9/12 doesn't quite look like what I saw, but similar), there are a number of interesting videos (including one of the Atlanta Panda giving birth):http://www.nbc4.com/video/index.html
do a search for "Panda"
Note - I had problems scrolling in the interior window in both Safari and IE, but was able to see the lower videos with FireFox.
Warning: horrible loud stupid ads before video. Louder then actual clips. Current Mood: pissed off

Rainy day panda cuteness
Tai Shan doesn't seem be be able to decide if Mei Xiang is a jungle gym or a chew toy. She's just flopped over a log trying to ignore him. Wonder how long that'll last?

Does anyone know if Tai Shan is up in that tree there showing on the cam? PC 1 has Mei inside, but PC2 is showing big pine tree whipping around in the wind.
Hmm. Now they are doing a "find the panda" scan with the cam, so maybe they don't even know!

upside down tiger
Okay, so this isn't pandas -- where did Tai Shan go, anyway? The camera's only been showing Mei for the hour or so I've intermittently popped by -- but the tiger cam has a tiger sleeping upside down. So cute! Not the best framing, because the camera doesn't move, but... cute, cute, cute.
|Wednesday, August 16th, 2006|
I just checked out the Panda web cam and it looks like they have the top viewing area open again. Tai is up in a tree - and they had trouble zooming in on him.

Tai Shan and Mei Xiang take advantage of some cooler then usual afternoon temps to roughhouse. (taken 8/9/06)
The sun wasn't being nice and the best viewing area was closed due to the construction at the zoo but they were still very fun to watch. :) More pics can be found in my gallery (just click on this pic and you'll get there)
Right now he's down on the rocks with a box (honey? if so, that's going to be a very sticky panda :)).

*squeak* It's not an active Tai, but oh he's so cute all lying down alongside Mei. She totally blocks him from one camera view, but with the other... awwww. And Mei's just as cute the way she's hanging off that side.
In other news I saw the pool back where it belongs and full of water. Can't tell if it's the same one since the camera wasn't close enough to see any bends/breaks/etc. :>

Or maybe it's annoy mom time? She's so determined and he's crawling all over her. Then she succeeded in pushing him away - he half fell down onto some lower rocks and just stayed there and ate some boo that had fallen down there. Now he's pestering again. I bet she can't wait for it to cool down so he can go out again and has some more ways to use some of his energy! Poor exhausted Mei Xiang.
They moved one of the pools inside.
The Hidey-hole kalanthe
was talking about is BEHIND the rock formation inside, on the left side. I don't think visitors can see him when he's there.
OK, now SHE'S doing the "let me out dance". Does she know how HOT it is out there?! (Or maybe she's begging the keepers to save her from her enthusiastic cub?)

Tai Shan is a REAL DC Panda. Here it is high 90s with a heat index of 102 and he's wandering around OUTSIDE. Mei Xiang is even out there now, but my theory is that it's dinner time and she thinks if she goes out more boo will appear. (and apples, and maybe even a fruitcicle.) Current Mood: amused
